Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was the son of a Russian immigrant and graduated from Farmers College in 1858 to became a lawyer in Cincinnati, Ohio. When the Civil War began, he enlisted in the Union Army as a Private and was mustered in with Company A, known as the Guthrie Grays, of the 6th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was transferred to the 74th Ohio Infantry and commissioned as 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant. He was transferred again and briefly assigned to Camp Chase Prison in Columbus, Ohio as its Post-Adjutant. He was then commissioned as the acting Adjutant-General of Miller's Brigade during the Tullahoma, Chickamauga, and Eastport Campaigns. He eventually served on the staffs of Major Generals William Rosecrans and George Henry Thomas. He received three brevet promotions on March 13, 1865 for the ranks of Major, Colonel, and Brigadier General of U. S. Volunteers. He resumed his law practice in Cincinnati, Ohio after the war and was elected as the corresponding secretary of the Society of 618 "Ciudad Real" in 1869. He authored "The Army of the Cumberland", a popular essay, published in 1887. He died from pneumonia while visiting Italy when he was 63 years old. (bio by: K Guy)
