Lilly Rare Book Department at the University of Indiana, Blooming ton, IN

In January 2015, my writing mentor, Mr. John H. Trombley and I went to the Lilly Rare Books Department at the University of Indiana, Blooming ton, IN. We both looked at a Thomas Paine's pamphlet Common Sense printed in 1776, Philadelphia by Styner and Cist. We also looked at a diary of over 40 balloon rides from Philadelphia printed by Cist.
I made another journey to the Lilly Library October 6-7, 2016 to review findings from this past year's notes. I have found that many Drs. in Philadelphia were at attendance when the balloon took off into the morning skies.

George Washington was in attendance. The ballon ride was a main attraction in Philadelphia at this time. It also shows that Cist was in Philadelphia at this time compared to being elsewhere.

A historical note to future scholars: Charles Cist along with Thomas Paine came over to New York then to Philadelphia from London England in 1769. Individuals with a Dr. degree boarded ships without having to be listed on the passenger manifest. With this knowledge, Could Charles Cist attended the Treaty of Paris? Cist was already known for his abilities of speaking multiple languages. He was already on "the run" when  he changed his name in London, England in the 1760's.

Historical note to scholars: I have visited our family cemetery Cist plots numerous times, but a current visit revealed the stone marker of Reverend Weiss. Weiss made multiple trips across the Atlanic. Reverend Weiss was involved with the Cist family during the second generation with Jacob and Lewis because the original Cist married Mary Weiss. Once again, the Cist letter addressed to Weiss at Fort Allyn in Pennsylvania in 1797.
