Rare 18th Century Balloon Plate from Ebay site.

This is a rare 18th Century Balloon Plate commemorating a hot air balloon ride. In a previous blog post the frenchman, Jean-Pierre Blanchard, came to Philadelphia to continue scientific experiments with instruments donated by Benjamin Franklin. The Lilly library rare books department at the University of Indiana provided this from its collection. I am making connections from a European to early American scientific studies that place Charles Cist in the group of participants in Philadelphia.

This plate is a symbol of a letter that has been passed down through the generations. Symbols can be an object, a living breathing person, animal, or a letter. This is an example of an oral history informational letter. All these ways were used to communicate letters during Charles Cist's life.

An oral letter could have been written at the dinner table discussing more about where the hot air ballon was going to go. There were day and night trips. The Cists were involved with the building of the National road that continued westward through Ohio and Indiana and out west. Many individuals and families were involved with the direction of the national road. Both free men and slaves were participates.https://publicpleasuregarden.blogspot.com/2019/02/exhibitions-in-american-public-spaces_17.html

Blue Ash, Ohio cemetery

Enclosed are photos from a visit to the Blue Ash, Ohio cemetery. A name to look for is the Roosa family. This family name will appear in the US #40, National Road cemetery blog post.

Additionally, the Snyder/ Snider family has a rich history as Chaplins during the American Revolution and the Civil War, possibly with the War of 1812, too. I am still learning about this connection.

Greenville, Ohio cemetery

I have invited a historian, David, to attend a visit to the Greenville, Ohio cemetery with me to continiue to explore connections with the trans-Atlantic trade of Europeans to the British colonies. To future my education I have been reading John Johnston and the Indians in the Land of the Three Miamis, by Leonard U. Hill with Recollections of Sixty Years by John Johnston. There is a blend of mixing from the French and Indian War and Philadelphia.

As David and I were examing the gravesites in Greenville, I noticed familiar names from family stories. The dates and names of towns helped put together a time line from pioneer traveling movements to the Western front of the Northwest Territory. General Arthur St. Clair was governor.

Grave site of Captain E.E.Nutt among other US Navy officers at Sidney, Ohio cemetery.

I have woundered who the captains were for the ships that travelled back and forth on the Enlightment trans-atlantic movent from Europe to the New World during the 1700 and 1800's. The movement was already in motion much earlier that my time line. Once again, Charles Cist was born in 1732 the same year as George Washington. I know that Cist came over in 1769 with Thomas Paine. Benjiman Franklin's brother-in-law Bache sponsord the ship. The owner of the ship was a Masonic lodge. Captain James Allyn was a captain during this time period. It took six weeks to travel from Europe to the New World. In a later generation, Captain E.E. Nutt (1837-1911) was a captain who sailed the ocean. Enclosed are photos of the Nutt gravesite in Sidney, Ohio, at the Graceland Cemetery.

Covington, OH JR Clark Library

I was at the JR Clarke library located at 102 East Spring Street, Covington, Ohio 45318. I read many history books on the second floor. I had struck up a conversation with a library patron named, David. He mentioned that he was part of the Flectcher family. One of the books that I was researching was the Sylvester Thompson family. Samuel Thompson settled in the Dayton, Ohio area during the mid 1800's. I was trying to find a similarity connection with the Samuel Thompson house in Glendale, Ohio located at the corner of Ivy Avenue and Oak Street. David also mentioned that many houses made from Lime stone came from the Miami Valley Limestone quarry. I has made a note to see if the Samuel B. Allen house was made from the Limestone quarries in Miami County. How was the Lime stone brought to Cincinnati, Ohio?

The Gathering at Garst- Greenville, Ohio.

The Gathering at Garst is a lovely late summer festival held in Greenville, Ohio. Their website lists a schedule of events for the last weekend in July, www.gateringatgarst.com. The weekend events include, museum exhibits, live historical encampment characters from the War of 1812 and towards the Civil War period, and hayrides for families. The musical talent was inviting and at a good decible, so families could still talk to each other. I gladly paid the $5.00 dollars for parking. Enclosed are photos of the events.

Urbana Public Library- Tech support

I have learned some more tech support at the Urbana Public Library today. US Rt. 36 from Piqua, Ohio is the way I came from Troy, Ohio. June 26th, I am at the Covington, OH JR Clark public library studing and reading in their historical private room on the second floor. I am researching if Mr. Sylvester Thompson is connected to the Thompson house in Historic Glendale, OH.
